Globalstar's SPOT delivers peace of mind for over 7,000 more outdoor enthusiasts with record number of European activations in 2014

Highlights:

  • SPOT gained 7,033 new European users in 2014
  • SPOT satellite devices used to initiate 27 rescues in Europe in 2014
  • Total of 3,400 rescues worldwide to date thanks to SPOT

Dublin, Ireland , January 15 2015- Globalstar Europe Satellite Services Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Globalstar Inc. (NYSE MKT: GSAT) and the leader in satellite messaging and emergency notification technologies, announced today that its SPOT products have been used to initiate 27 rescues in Europe, many life-saving, and over 600 rescues globally in 2014.

Since the technology’s launch in 2007, SPOT products have been used to initiate over 3,400 rescues globally and are currently at an average of a rescue every day. With hundreds of thousands of SPOT units in service globally, SPOT delivers affordable and reliable connectivity and real-time GPS tracking, providing reassurance when there is unreliable or no mobile coverage. In Europe, the SPOT customer base increased by over 7,000, a record number of activations in any single year.

SPOT products offer users worldwide peace of mind, by allowing them to track their assets, use location-based messaging and emergency notification technology and to make calls beyond the reach of mobile signals. Over the past seven years, sailors, hikers, off-road travellers and outdoor enthusiasts have come to depend on SPOT’s life-saving capabilities.

For example, David and Jayne Turner of Birmingham UK, set off around the world in a reconditioned Land Rover, dubbed Lizzybus. Their 134,000-mile odyssey lasted five years and took in 66 countries on six continents. They chose a SPOT device to keep in touch with family in the UK and let them know they were safe. The Turners commented: “We had a very limited budget, we saw the ad for SPOT, and we said we’ll try it. As a way of communicating with people, as a way of letting them know you’re safe every day – and that’s what you need when travelling – SPOT absolutely hits the mark. It was easy to set up, we turned it on, and bingo, it worked instantly.”

Other individuals are using the SPOT Gen3™ in ingenuous ways. Robert Hamilton of Vigour Events helps open water swimmers achieve their goal of swimming the 21km length of Loch Lomond in Scotland. By including a SPOT Gen3 in each swimmer’s bright orange tow float, everyone on the team and back at home can track each swimmer’s progress on the 13 to 16 hour journey. “The SPOT Gen3 is small and lightweight so doesn’t impact each athlete’s progress. After a swim, each swimmer can use the data to do a detailed analysis of their performance,” said Hamilton.

SPOT continues to innovate with products and services that deliver peace of mind, reliable connectivity and accurate GPS tracking solutions that are relevant to millions of users around the world, such as:

  • SPOT Gen3, rugged and affordable device providing off-the-grid messaging, emergency alerts, extended battery life, and extreme GPS tracking at 2 ½ minute intervals. SPOT Gen3 has an RRP of €179.
  • SPOT Trace™, GPS tracking device using 100% satellite technology to track anything, anytime, anywhere. Never lose sight of your car, boat, motorcycle, quad bike or other valuable gear - perfect for anyone who has something worth protecting. SPOT Trace retails at an RRP of €125.
  • The SPOT App, convenient web-based interface allowing users to easily view their SPOT messages, show their track points and monitor their assets via smartphone or tablet.

“SPOT products are crucial for the outdoor recreation market and aviation, as well as a critical government and enterprise solution,” said Jay Monroe, CEO and Chairman of Globalstar. "We receive reports almost daily from individuals who have thankfully had our products when they needed them most. Continuously saving lives drives us to keep innovating satellite communications solutions that reach a market well beyond traditional mobile satellite users.”

The ability to send SOS notifications to GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC) and emergency dispatch services are included in the SPOT Basic Service plan. Additionally, SPOT offers the GEOS Member Rescue Benefit, for as low as €15 a year, which covers additional expenses associated with search and rescue efforts. The IERCC is staffed 24/7 with dedicated and highly trained operatives who have access to emergency responders worldwide, to ensure timely and efficient response to each emergency situation.
