Survey Reveals Winter Safety is on the Minds of British Columbians

Results of a Nielsen survey conducted for Globalstar shows majority of British Columbians recognize importance of maintaining communications access and having a back-up plan

Mississauga, ON (December 4, 2014) – Globalstar has released results from a survey* revealing that when it comes to winter road trips and outdoor activities, the majority of British Columbians have safety on their minds. The survey was conducted by Nielsen for Globalstar and shows that the majority of British Columbians recognize the importance of communications access and having a back-up plan. The B.C. results are shown below, alongside national numbers which were released on November 19th, 2014.

When it comes to winter road travel and outdoor activities:

  • 87% of British Columbians say it is important to maintain 24/7 access to 9-1-1 emergency services. Survey shows that B.C. just trails the national average of 92%.
  • 73% of British Columbians say it is important to ensure a vital line of communication access for family, friends and co-workers. The survey reveals B.C. is just behind the national average which is 76%.
  • 67% of British Columbians say it is important to have a reliable, back-up communications plan to cellular. A consistent lower percentage of Canadians (61%) say the same.

“Approaching the start of what many weather forecasters are predicting to be another tough winter, this survey reveals that the majority of British Columbians recognize the importance of communications access and having a reliable back-up plan,” said Jim Mandala, Vice President and General Manager of Globalstar Canada Satellite Co. “Satellite communications devices like SPOT can help take the risk out of winter activities by providing 24/7 communications access to family, friends, and if needed, emergency services, completely independent of the availability of cellular networks.”

Since the technology’s launch in 2007, SPOT satellite devices have been used to initiate over 3,400 rescues around the world, with almost 1,000 in Canada. According to Dave Taylor, a volunteer member of the Canadian Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA), it is important to prepare for outdoor activities this winter with a trip plan that includes an emergency communications device like SPOT:

"This winter, SPOT can be an important part of trip planning and emergency preparedness for anyone considering outdoor adventures off-the-beaten track or in the back country. SPOT can tell others where you are with GPS accuracy even if you don't know where you are. And, with tracking mode enabled and a good trip plan in place, your GPS coordinates are plotted at pre-set intervals on a map so that even if you are unable to initiate a call for help, your last reported coordinates can be used as a starting point which can significantly reduce search times. Bottom line - carry an emergency communications device and file a trip plan."
The SPOT family of satellite solutions includes SPOT Gen3, the next generation of the SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger, a GPS tracking device that provides on or off-the-cellular-grid messaging, emergency alerts, and GPS tracking. SPOT Global Phone is an affordable satellite phone designed for recreational users that enables calls virtually anywhere, even beyond the boundaries of cellular. SPOT Trace is a GPS tracking device which uses 100% satellite technology to track anything, anytime, anywhere (including cars, snowmobiles, boats or other valuable gear).
