  • Absa Cape Epic takes place over 8 days from March 18 2018 – March 25 2018

Cape Town, South Africa, September 14, 2017Globalstar Satellite Africa, , a subsidiary of Globalstar, Inc. (NYSE American: GSAT) and the sole provider of SPOT in southern Africa, announced today that the 2018 ABSA CAPE EPIC will require all teams to carry a small, lightweight, SPOT Gen3® satellite tracking and safety device. Both SPOT Gen3® and SPOT Trace® will be used in the Absa Cape Epic to provide tracking of the teams and support vehicles during the 8 day stage race.

The Absa Cape Epic, taking place from March 18 to March 25 2018, is an eight day physically gruelling and mentally demanding mountain bike stage race in South Africa’s Western Cape Province. The race covers 658km of untamed, unspoilt scenery through some of the most beautiful regions with 13 530m of accumulated climbing over the distance. The Absa Cape Epic is limited to 680 teams and must be completed by both members of a two-person team. The route changes every year, attracting aspiring amateur and professional mountain bikers from around the world.

With rider safety being paramount to the Absa Cape Epic, this year the organisation is making the switch from GSM based tracking solutions to SPOT satellite tracking solutions as many section of the race route are out of cellular range. SPOTGen3 devices provide an S.O.S. function that allows race organisers to know where all their riders are out on the route and dispatch help effectively should an emergency occur.

Glyn Broomberg, Head of Race Operations for the Absa Cape Epic commented. “Rider safety is of paramount importance to the event and by having a satellite solution we are substantially improving our ability to track teams and react to emergencies out on each stage. In addition to this, the SPOT solution allows us to effectively track and move event assets during the course of each stage including vehicles, personnel and medical support.

Given the remoteness of the stages using the SPOT devices provides a whole new level of support that can be given to various elements of the event. This includes the event developing its own platform, "Epic Command” which will manage the flow of the data from the tracking units and ensure that all of the relevant parties receive the required feed".

Globalstar Satellite Africa has committed to sponsoring the event for the next three years as Official Tracking Partner of the Absa Cape Epic which marks the SPOT family of products’ 10 years of lifesaving technology.

“We are proud to be providing an effective tracking solution to the Absa Cape Epic from 2018. As an Amabubesi member myself and having completed three Absa Cape Epic races, I am aware of the rugged and off-the-grid nature of the race, and the limitations of GSM tracking thereof. Our satellite tracking will increase rider safety, increase the viewing experience for those at home as well as increase the efficiency of the race organiser’s systems,” commented Sean McCormick, Managing Director of Globalstar Satellite Africa.

SPOT Gen3 retails for R2699 (excl. VAT) and requires a service plan.
